Energy Psychology is the name for a broad range of psychological treatments that utilise the human energy system. Energy Psychology can help us release emotional pain and stress through mind/body energy techniques, and can be an effective tool for emotional healing.

EFT is an energy psychology. It is an easy technique that is very powerful and is likened to doing acupuncture on yourself.

Solving weight and eating issues is about discovering what emotions or past events might still be triggering our eating behaviour and EFT is a powerful tool for releasing emotions and creating healing.

The effects of EFT are often immediate and each time you clear a statement and any related emotional memories you build momentum toward profound change.

It is important when using this technique to follow your own trail of thoughts and unravel the connections that are true for you.

The best way to find out what statements to use during EFT is by noticing what emotions or events might be connected as you tap on the first statement  you have selected – things that come to mind like past memories that might be triggered as you tap.

It appears that you can obtain great relief from emotional feelings around any issue including the deprivation, frustration and shame that often accompanies weight and eating problems.

Assess the level of emotion you feel after each round of tapping. Tap every day on the issues that appear in relation to food and eating and the feelings that arise when you are at home, at work etc.

The Tapping Points

How to Tap: The short version of the tapping process involves:

  1. Tap the side of your hand (called the karate chop point) whilst repeating the full statement – 3 times.
  1. Tap the points on the face whilst repeating the shortened statement each time(eg Even though I am afraid I won’t lose weight)
  1. Repeat the face tapping 3 times or until you feel some shift, perhaps a lessening of the feelings, or a perhaps you sigh, feel calmer etc)
  1. Notice what occurs to you while tapping – any memories or other thoughts connected to this issue. Use this as the basis for the following statements.
  1. If not clear and you want to repeat the process take a few deep breaths and do eye rotations around one way then back again before starting with “Even I STILL feel…. “
  1. Move onto other statements and repeat the process.
  1. Do this DAILY with various statements for best results. Try it for a week and see what you think.

The Shortcut main points to tap:

  • Beginning of eyebrow
  • End of eyebrow
  • Under the eye
  • Top lip
  • Bottom lip
  • Collarbone (2cm down then 2 cm across towards the shoulder)
  • Under the arm (the point far left in this diagram)
  • Crown (top of the head)

The one hand point to note is the one on the side of the hand called the karate chop point – as if you were going to do a karate chop this is where you tap with the 2 fingers of the other hand (index and middle fingers.)

(You don’t need the other hand points but you can use them in addition to the points listed above if you want to)

Addressing the Cause

Based on the ancient principles of acupuncture,  EFT is a simple tapping procedure that gently realigns the body’s energy system, without the discomfort of needles. Unlike other energy healing methods, EFT incorporates an emotional element to the healing process, addressing unresolved emotional issues as a likely cause of physical disease, psychological dysfunction, and personal performance limits. 

Negative emotional experiences disrupt the energy meridians that run through our body.  The physical changes we feel from those disruptions, like nausea or anxiety, become attached to the memory of that experience and affect the way we see the world…until we heal that disruption.  Properly applied, EFT quickly realigns the energy meridians with respect to negative memories, disconnects the physical discomfort that we attached to it, and quite often removes the resulting symptoms.

EFT continues to provide encouraging results, even with newcomers applying EFT to themselves. Some cases are more complex, however, and may require more detailed attention from an experienced EFT Practitioner.

The Foundation of EFT

EFT was introduced in 1995 by Gary Craig, a Stanford Engineering graduate in lifelong pursuit of personal well-being.

“I have been intensely interested in personal improvement via psychology since my age 13.  That was when I recognized that the quality of my thoughts was mirrored in the quality of my life.  Since then I have been self taught in this field, seeking only those procedures that, in my opinion, produced results.  EFT is my latest finding, the core of which I learned from Dr. Roger Callahan. I also have high regard for Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) in which I am a Certified Master Practitioner.”

Gary Craig is neither a psychologist nor a licensed therapist. He is an ordained minister through the Universal Church of God in Southern California, which is non-denominational and embraces all religions. He is a dedicated student of A Course in Miracles, and approaches his work with a decidedly spiritual perspective. However, there is no specific spiritual teaching connected to EFT or its Practitioners.

“I've been doing energy healing work since 1991 and my jaw still drops at the results.  I've lost count of the number of phobias, panic/anxiety attacks, traumatic memories, guilt, grief and physical ailments that have been elegantly relieved (often in minutes) by this procedure.  Even though EFT violates just about every conventional belief out there, the results remain remarkable.  EFT isn't perfect, of course.  We don't get 100%.  But it usually works well and the results are sometimes spectacular.  It often works where nothing else will.
